Intro to Bookbinding

ABOUT THIS WORKSHOP
We are delighted to host this workshop run by Leanne Fischler on the basics of bookbinding. Leanne was an intern at MAKLab during the summer of 2015 and is now freshly graduated from Product Design at DJCAD and moving forward with her career as a designer.

Bookbinding is the traditional art of making books by hand. Sheets of paper are sewn together and covered in a protective and beautiful case. In this workshop you will be given an introduction to the basics of bookbinding and leave with your own Moleskine-style hardback book.

In this workshop, we will guide you through the process of making the hardback case for an A6 book using a pre-made “book block” (the set of paper pages inside). You’ll also get the opportunity to customise your handmade cover using a variety of materials and some of the facilities available at MAKLab such as laser cutting and vinyl transfers. You can even bring in your own materials to customise your book such as a piece of (thickish) fabric or some nice paper.

**Please note - This workshop is subject to cancellation in the event of low booking numbers. In the unlikely event, you will be fully refunded and notified the day before the class is scheduled**

Make Do and Repair Symposium

A gift doesn't have to be just for Christmas, it can be for life! Rather than spending all your heard earned cash this Christmas, why come and learn how you can give an object a second life at our Make Do and Repair Symposium on the 17th December at MAKLab?

The Make Do and Repair Symposium is run in partnership with TrashLab and the Kinning Park Complex ahead of the launch of the KPC Repair Cafe on the 18th December. It's a great opportunity for people who want to learn more about sustainable living, what services the Repair Cafe can offer and how they can support this great venture.

Schedule:

11am – 12:30pm: Tear Down Workshop
Come and have a go at taking apart some every day household electronics, identifying their components and identifying some of the repair solutions as well as some of the issues that may prevent you from being able to carry out repairs in some instances.

12:30pm – 1:30pm: Lunch Break

1:30pm – 2pm: Intro to MAKLab
Delphine Dallison will give an introduction to MAKLab and the work they carry out in support of sustainable design and manufacturing.

2pm – 2:30pm: Trashlab Talk
Andrew Gryf Patterson will share the experiences and development story of Trashlab, an ongoing project of Pixelache Helsinki since 2012. Trashlab is a cultural platform that explores experimental art-design-technology practice between hacker and maker cultures, in the context of re/up-cycling and the increased availability of new fabrication tools.

2pm – 3:30pm: Intro to the KPC Repair Café
Jon Dawes will introduce the Kinning Park Complex and their plans for the Repair Cafe which will be launched at Kinning Park on the 18th December.

3:30pm – 4pm: Open discussion

This event is free, but places are limited. Book your tickets online on Eventbrite at https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/make-do-and-repair-symposium-tickets-30165040448.

THE KINNING PARK COMPLEX is an independent multi-use community centre. Run by the community since they had to step in to prevent closure of the facility by the local Council in 1996. They maintain and rent out halls, meeting rooms, studios and office spaces at affordable prices where people and groups can put their ideas into action. Their current Community Development Projects Include Waste Not Want, a Climate Challenge funded project to reduce carbon emissions and a Volunteer Programme. In the last year, they have also started a new Garden and Bike project.
